Uniting Pontians in Australia since 1989

Welcome to Pontos in Australia!

Who are we?

In 1989, the 6 major Pontian organisations across 3 states came together and created a national body to represent the interest of the Greeks of Pontos nationally and to unite our people with one voice.

Its focus is on uniting Pontian Greeks living in Australia, and it has members in every state and territory. Pontos is a historical region located north east Asia Minor (specifically along the Black Sea), and Pontian Greeks are the descendants of the ancient Pontic Greeks, many of whom still live there. The Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia works to preserve Pontian culture and keep it alive for future generations. It also provides support for Pontian Greeks living in Australia, and works to promote Pontian culture and heritage within the wider Australian community.

If you live in Australia and wish to engage with one of our member clubs, please feel free to contact us and we will put you in touch with your local Pontian club.

Pontian culture

Pontian culture is a term used to describe the culture of Pontian Greeks, who are an ethnic group originating from Pontos, a historical region on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Pontian culture is also present in other countries with Pontian Greek diaspora populations, such as Australia. The Pontian Greek community in Australia has maintained many aspects of their culture, including language, food, music, and dance. Pontian culture is renowned for its passionate and exuberant nature, as well as its strong sense of family and community. Pontian Greeks are proud of their heritage and continue to celebrate their culture through traditional customs and activities.

Pontian Youth

Pontian youth in Australia are a shining example of the success of multiculturalism in this country. Pontian Greeks have a long history of migrating to other countries. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Pontians immigrated to Russia, Greece, Germany and the United States. In the 1950s, Pontian Greeks began to migrate to Australia, where they have quickly assimilated into society while maintaining their cultural heritage. Pontian youth in Australia are well-educated and successful, and they are an important part of the Australian Pontian community. Pontian Greeks in Australia have made significant contributions to the economy, culture, and politics of this country.

Greek Genocide

The Greek Genocide was the systematic extermination of Greek people by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Greek men were conscripted into the Ottoman army and sent to the front lines, where they were often exposed to disease and starvation. Greek women and children were deported to labor camps, where many perished from malnutrition and exposure. Greek property was confiscated, and Greeks were subjected to mass executions and mass deportations. The Greek Genocide resulted in the deaths of over 1 million Greeks and the displacement of millions more. Today, the Greek Genocide is widely recognized as one of the first examples of genocide in the modern era.
